Self Awareness

self awareness

Leadership begins with your own self awareness.

If you don't understand the impact your behavior has on the athletes and staff you work with you won't ever be able to fully tap into your potential as a leader.

In this training we'll:

  • Define self awareness, self management, social awareness, and relationship management

  • Learn ways to develop self awareness and better awareness of 'other'

  • Talk about debriefs and the value of doing debriefs with your team

  • Learn a simple structure for debriefs

  • Talk about the importance of reflection and strategies to reflect - as a coach and with your athletes

  • Talk about specific ways to coach your athletes and help them develop better self awareness

It probably won’t come as a great surprise that you spend the overwhelming majority of your time each day in some type of an interpersonal situation. It also probably won’t come as a great shock that a large number of team problems occur as a result of poor communication.

This paradox is why I work with coaches to become better communicators.

Communication isn’t a skill that you check the box and say, “yeah - I’ve got that skill. I’m good at that.

Communication is a skill you can always improve. Because it’s totally situational!

In this training we'll:

  • Define communication

  • Learn qualities of great communicators

  • Touch on generational differences, talk about ways to respect these differences, and how important it is to learn from each other

  • Talk about 8 different communication concepts you can teach and utilize with your team

  • Go over 5 ways you can improve as a communicator this season

Click here for the Flash Sheet on communication.

Vision & Action

Vision and action is a leadership skill: set a goal and work actively to reach it. This is something you do almost unconsciously as a coach.

Are there things you could do differently or even better if you put even more thought and intention behind this leadership skill? This training is all about helping you amp this skill up - for yourself and for your team.

Click here for the Flash Sheet on Vision and Action.

Judgement & Decision-Making

Judgement & Decision-making are two separate leadership skills that complement one another. Listen to this training if you wish your athletes had better judgement or sometimes question the decisions they make.

In this training we’ll:

  • Talk about how to develop GOOD judgement

  • Look at the relationship between competency and judgement

  • Take a closer look at risk and use a tool to stop, go, or yield when consequences and probability are high

  • Get ideas and specific questions for team discussions

  • Talk about specific frameworks for decision-making

Monthly Q&A Calls with Erica
We’ll connect using Zoom - a platform I use to connect with you online.

Here’s how these calls will work…

  1. If you can’t make the call, you can email me your questions or a description of a challenge you’re facing within 24-hours of our call.

  2. On the call, I’ll answer your questions and speak to the challenges you bring up.

  3. When I need more background (or clarification) from you I will try to connect with you before the call…or invite you to unmute yourself if you’re there (only if you’ve given me advanced permission).

  4. If you are there live and have a victory you’d like to share, a question you’d like to ask, or challenge you’d like some support around, we’ll have the opportunity to connect.

Confidentiality is of utmost importance to me. If you are not there on the call, I will not share names on these calls - only your questions and the description of your challenges. So you can feel safe knowing your identity will not ever be shared - unless you give me permission to do so.

I’d encourage you to join so you can see me - on your computer or phone. I often draw when I teach and sometimes share my screen or other resources on my computer.

If you need to be in ‘listen-only’ mode (you’re driving or can’t look at your screen) that’s okay. I’ll add recordings here if you want to go back to listen to or watch something we talked about for future reference.

I believe in a 360º approach to help you stay focused and productive. It’s less about time management and more about ‘YOU’ management! It’s so easy to get distracted and overwhelmed with all you’ve got going on as a coach. I recommend coaches do some sort of simple check-in on a QMWD basis (quarterly, monthly, weekly, and daily).

  • Look back and reflect. See what you’ve learn, what insights you’ve had, and where you’ve grown.

  • Identify your current challenges. See how you can write your challenge out so you are more solution-focused vs. staying in reactive mode and spinning your wheels.

  • Choose your priorities. You get to choose where your attention goes and where your energy flows. Decide what’s most important and focus there first.

Months (2).png

I believe that everyone…and I do mean everyone…is a leader. As a coach, you model leadership to your team every day. You get an opportunity to teach each athlete how to step up to be a stronger and more confident leader. What an awesome job!

Your athletes can engage as a leader through various leadership roles. They can improve specific leadership skills - just like athletic skills. Each athlete will have their own unique leadership style. Your role as a coach is to help them learn more about who they are, their strengths and areas for growth, and how they can work with others to influence people in a positive way - both on and off the field.

Months (3).png

Your team will continually cycle through the stages of team development: forming - storming - norming - performing - transforming. Your role as a coach will be to determine where your team is and what they need throughout these different stages. It sounds simple…yet it’s not easy.

For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.
— ― Rudyard Kipling, The Jungle Book

There are foundational elements to building a team strong enough to weather the storms of the season. Coaches who invest time, energy, and resources helping their team work together end up saving time, energy, and resources when things are on the line. Coaches who have only focused on the x’s and o’s have less buy-in, unity, and resilience when faced with challenging circumstances.
